AI@PBI

CAP: Expanding AI Teaching and Research Capacity at a Predominantly Black Institution (AI@PBI) is a two-year capacity-building project funded by the National Science Foundation that was designed to respond to the emerging need for higher education to assume a significant role in the management of the spread and use of artificial intelligence (AI) in society. The aims of AI@PBI are to support CSU faculty to educate students and to contribute to research to address the societal transformations generated by artificial intelligence in everyday life.  Because of the emerging and defining role of AI in contemporary society and the presence of inequality which leaves some groups particularly vulnerable to social and economic consequences of transformative technologies, participation from faculty from all disciplines across campus is essential to collectively decide how this technology will be addressed through teaching, learning and research.

The AI@PBI project has six goals:

  1. develop AI awareness in CSU faculty from diverse disciplines
  2. equip faculty with basic knowledge of AI and AI tools that can be infused into existing courses
  3. plan for future partnership with an AI institute for professional development/professional networking
  4. prepare for AI curriculum development
  5. establish the groundwork for cross-disciplinary AI research projects
  6. development of a faculty-led, campus-wide strategic roadmap for the integration of AI

The intended impacts of this project include enhancing the ability of CSU to produce diverse graduates who have the capability to understand and skillfully engage with AI in their careers and to participate meaningfully in society, guiding it as it is being transformed by AI.
