The Louis Stokes-Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded program named in honor of former congressman Louis Stokes. The LSAMP program focuses on increasing the number of underrepresented students completing degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) on the undergraduate and graduate level. The program works to help remove barriers to inclusion and participation of underrepresented students (African American, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders)
Who is Louis Stokes?
Louis Stokes was a politician and attorney who served 15 terms in the House of Representatives
as a Congressman from the state of Ohio. Congressman Stokes is noted for his advocacy
of service and for defending underserved populations throughout his career. He sponsored
numerous bills and was a strong advocate of educational opportunities for minorities.
