Degree Options (30 semester hours):

There are two main options:

  • Option #1: At least thirty credit hours of graduate-level coursework, with a B (3.0) or better average, and completion of a comprehensive examination in English or American literature or linguistics after at least 21 hours.
  • Option #2: At least thirty semester hours of graduate work selected with the graduate advisor, including required core courses.

Core/Required Courses include (but are not limited to):

  • ENG 5331: Literary Criticism
  • ENG 5427: Methods and Materials of Literary Research
  • ENG 5436: Descriptive Grammar
  • ENG courses exploring Black American poetry, Black literature, immigrant literature, etc.
