The Chicago State University Child Development Laboratory School serves as a dynamic interdisciplinary hub that connects early childhood education with the broader academic mission of Chicago State University.
Through collaborative inquiry, innovative teaching, and community-engaged research, we prepare future educators and professionals to become leaders in equitable early childhood practice. Our mission is to nurture young children’s holistic development while advancing knowledge, scholarship, and excellence in early learning and care.
Early childhood is a powerful period of growth that deserves environments rich in curiosity, belonging, cultural affirmation, and joyful learning. Our philosophy is rooted in a holistic, child-centered, and culturally grounded approach that values children as competent, capable learners whose identities and cultural backgrounds are essential to their development.
We follow children’s interests, questions, and discoveries—and support their development through hands-on exploration, creativity and meaningful play.
We partner closely with families and specialists to support individualized pathways for every child. Our approach ensures children of all abilities, backgrounds, and learning styles have equitable access to a rich early learning experience.
As a laboratory school, we function as a living-learning environment where interdisciplinary collaboration thrives. We provide:
We view families as essential partners and honor their strengths, cultures, and aspirations. By fostering meaningful relationships and community engagement, we create a supportive, culturally respectful learning environment that prepares children to thrive in school and beyond.

| Dr. David Kanis |
The CSU Child Development Laboratory School—originally established as the Kanis Child Development Center—was founded in 2022 to support student parents at Chicago State University.
In 2023, the school expanded to serve students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community, offering comprehensive programs that support children’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development.
In 2025, the Center was designated as a Laboratory School, furthering its mission in early childhood education, teacher preparation, and research. That same year, the Donne E. Trotter Infant-Toddler Annex opened, extending our full early childhood education model to provide care and learning experiences for children ages 3 to 24 months.
Our school was made possible by a generous gift given in honor of Dr. David Kanis, who is a philanthropist and former Chicago State University professor.
