High School Shadow Day at CIMST Inspires Future Innovators

On April 23, 2026, the Department of Computing, Information and Mathematical Sciences, and Technology (CIMST) at Chicago State University (CSU) warmly welcomed a group of high school students from Perspectives Leadership High School for an engaging and enriching High School Shadow Day. The program, held from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, provided students with an immersive introduction to academic life, cutting-edge technology, and career pathways in computing and related fields.

The day began with a formal welcome and introduction to university leadership and the CIMST community. Students had the opportunity to hear from Dean Mark Smith of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Mohammad Abdus Salam, Chairman of the CIMST Department, and Dr. Rohan Attele, Professor of Mathematics. They were also introduced to both graduate and undergraduate students, who shared insights about their academic journeys, research experiences, and student life at CSU.

As part of the experience, the visiting students participated in a guided campus tour that included key facilities such as the Gwendolyn Brooks Library, Student Union Building, Emil and Patricia A. Jones Convocation Center, and the CIMST Department laboratories. These visits provided students with a firsthand look at the resources and learning environments available at CSU.

A highlight of the day was the students’ participation in a hands-on hackathon, organized and led by CIMST students. This interactive session allowed the high school participants to collaborate, think creatively, and engage in problem-solving activities using technology—offering them a glimpse into real-world applications of computer science.

The event was marked by continuous engagement, meaningful interactions, and a vibrant exchange of ideas between high school students, faculty, and current CIMST students. The visiting group was accompanied by their teachers, Alex Evers and Jason Bredensen, whose support helped make the visit successful. Special appreciation is extended to Dr. Carolyn C. Wadlington, Dual Enrollment Director at CSU, for her instrumental role in coordinating and facilitating this opportunity.
